Playing Guitar in San Jose

I got a call back in 1999 to play guitar with a group of musicians backing up Steve Mcpherson from Hillsongs church. We practiced up for a month and when Steve arrived, we practiced some more and then went on a short tour.

On one of our stops we were scheduled to play at this gigantic church in San Jose California. It would be an understatement to say these people liked to dress up. Lots of make up, obvious augmentations, even the seventy year old pastor had tighter skin and blacker hair than us thirty something musicians.

As we were playing I noticed one lady who stuck out because she was so tall. She was at least six feet before heels, dressed to the nines, a black glittery dress with a huge black hat. It was the size of a tire and covered with feathers.

After the service I was cleaning up my gear on the stage. There were a few people standing near the front praying for others and the tall lady was stretching out her hand toward someone as she was praying.
I had to walk past her to go out of the church.

She followed me with her eyes and as I got close she said “Honey, you were amazing!”

I wanted to say something nice to her like, “Well thank you, and God bless you” … you know, something friendly and churchy, but all that came out of my mouth was “Bless your hat!”

I acted normal, quickened my pace and got out of there.

I told Steve and he howled with laughter.

If you ever hear him tell the story as if it happened to him, you now know better. 😉

  • I was so happy to be standing beside you to witness that when it happened. She really had a tremendous hat. That’s one of my favorite road stories, one of the funniest things I’ve heard, and I’ve shared the story with many people. 😀
